so, i decided to look into how many championships and underchampionships each team had on their team pages as of season 24, in order to try to determine a little bit more about prehistory.
we already know:
- the alaskan immortals were the champions of season A (prehistory i)
- the blue baltimore crabs (from prehistory, not our modern red crabs) were the champions of season B
- there was not a postseason in season E
- the first season of prehistory ii was season AA, but we don't know almost anything else about that next "chapter" of prehistory
so, the seasons we have left are seasons C and D of prehistory i. the other thing we can stand to learn from this is, we may possibly be able to get a better guess at how many seasons there were in prehistory ii.
what i did was i went into before, set the date to various points in season 24 that would allow me to get the data i needed, and looked at the pages of each team, including all the prehistory teams (and the paws). basically i just put all the teams and how many championship and underchampionship wins they had into a spreadsheet.
the next piece of info i needed was WHEN each team was eligible to win a championships. aka what postseasons they were alive during. for that i used — and this stuff is varying levels of forbidden knowledge (though not inaccessible to someone with inspect element) so be warned — a handy graphic that i got from maincord, plus the (DEFINITELY fk) analysis i did in this tumblr post. once i had the dates for each team, i put that in the spreadsheet too.
FINDINGS: (full data can be found here)
- season C was won by the canada artists
- we know that the canada artists were incinerated on day 3 of season D.
- therefore we also know they could only have participated in 3 postseasons: season A, B, and C
- since we already know who won in seasons A and B. therefore, the canada artists could only have received their championship win in season C!
- season D was won by either the downward dogs, the new hampshire eggplants, OR the wyoming dolphins
- all three of these teams have at least one upchampionship, were alive at the end of season D, and were a part of the league in season AA (prehistory ii)
- the dogs and the dolphins have one championship each (as well as a downchampionship, actually); the eggplants have 3 (no downchampionships, though)
- therefore, there are 3 possibilities:
- the downward dogs won in season D, and the dolphins and the eggplants got all of their championships in PHII
- the wyoming dolphins won in season D, and the dogs and the eggplants got all of their championships in PHII
- the new hampshire eggplants won one of their 3 championships in season D and got the other two in PHII, and the dolphins and dogs got all of their championships in PHII as well
- ultimately there isn't really a way to tell here, unfortunately, but we can at least make a good guess.
- (it is, however, interesting that TWO of our possibilities have both an upchamp and a downchamp (they're the only teams that have both!), which suggests that they were both very good AND very bad! more on this later)
- between all of the teams we know participated in PHII, there is a total of 8 upchampionships and 6 downchampionships
- teams with upchamps: busan bison (1); canberra drop bears (1); lisbon lynx (1); london frogs (1); new hampshire eggplants (2)
- (the last two are two out of three of the downward dogs, wyoming dolphins, and new hampshire eggplants.)
- teams with downchamps: beijing bicycles (1); boulders bay birds (1); downward dogs (1); portland otters (1); são paulo parrots (1); wyoming dolphins (1)
- we can therefore conclude that prehistory ii ran for at least EIGHT SEASONS!
purely speculatively, i'm guessing probably what happened is, at the very least, the dolphins (if not also the dogs) were good at blaseball closer to the BEGINNING of PH2, and got worse so they were eventually bad enough to get a downchamp as well. im willing to assume that downchamps were added AFTER the beginning of the era, so the dogs probably started out good as well, though they were a replacement team, so maybe what happened is they won a downchampionship and THEN were lucky enough to get picked as the wild card one season, and somehow managed to win their upchampionship THAT way.
anyway, what i DID find DID still leave me with a few questions:
- were downchampionships and upchampionships held simultaneously (like at the end of expansion)? or did the league do a flip for several seasons where there were no upchampionships held?
- what about the breach teams who came in with upchampionships we hadn't observed? we know the georgias (4), mechanics (3), and worms (4) were not added to the league at the beginning of PH2 like the rest of these teams, but could they have been added to the league later?
- if they didn't get their wins there, where else could they have gotten them? it takes 3 wins to ascend, so presumably not the big leagues...
- also, the georgias and worms both came in with 4, so we can assume they won one each in the big leagues. but they were not very good when they arrived after the breach, so how long were they there for?
- or did the big leagues operate on different rules maybe? the crabs only won one game out of 99 up there, so maybe being bad was good in the big leagues?
- OR maybe they both had four BEFORE the ascension rule got made?
- the first season in PH2 was season AA — what numbering system did they use???
- please know i am picturing the "if a dog wore pants" meme rn
- would it be AA-BB-CC or AA-AB-AC??? or something else???
