"parker macmillan" - fridays song by me [originally posted here]
i wrote this song immediately after the season 23 election, in which parker macmillan roamed to the fridays. we pretty much knew at the time that we were going to die. i've been following blaseball since the very first siesta, and its been such a huge part of my life. thank you blaseball fans. its been an honor
after some thought on the matter of the recent announcement by the devs i have come to this conclusion:
yes blaseball the sim is no longer running. BUT: blaseball is not just the sim. it’s also the community, AND the stories we tell about it. and as long as we still have more to say about it, blaseball is not over
i am also a long-time fan of doctor who, and ive always thought that it and blaseball are SO similar in many ways. a major reason for this is how fan-made both are. did you know that the most prolific incarnation of the doctor is the one with the least tv appearances? after the tv movie came out in 1996, fans created a huge amount of content about the 8th doctor in the form of novels, audios, and comics. there are 73 novels (aka edas) in the eighth doctor adventure series, and paul mcgann has played the eighth doctor continuously for longer than any other actor to play the doctor, as he has done many, MANY audios.
and doctor who was originally cancelled in 1989. all through the gap between then and when RTD (himself a fan) restarted the series in 2005, fans kept creating. and fans still are creating! all three showrunners of modern who are long-time fans, as are two of the actors who have played the doctor since 2005 (david tennant and peter capaldi were both fans as kids).
dr who fans have also been known for our efforts to catalogue and share stuff for a long time now — there are lost episodes from the 60s that we still have audio of only because people watching recorded it. today it can be hard to find certain things – a ton of the novels are out of print, for example. but i can ask dr who tumblr if anyone has a way to read / listen / watch, and within an hour ill get three different answers!
so. blaseball fans. what we need to do is we need to make like dr who fans. tell all our favorite stories! and make everything we want to! yes, its a brave new world for us — but we already have a start in cataloguing and in just HAVING the communities we do, that not every cancelled series gets.
every tiny story of your experience is worth it. EVERY story. so tell those stories! put your fics on ao3! draw your favorite players for the 401st time! make a wiki account and make weird lore pages! write another blaseball song!! just go nuts!!!
